Spencer & Kenny
Our names are Spencer and Kenny. We’ve been together for eight years, and we recently got married. As a same sex couple we’ve always known that we wanted to add to our family by adopting a child. We’re very excited to be in the process!
Where We Live
We live in downtown Vancouver on a beautiful tree lined street in the west end. Our building is a low rise building and we are on the third floor (top floor). Our home is newly renovated and has a nice cosy wood burning fireplace for the family to cuddle up to in the winter, and large balcony for us to get out and BBQ or just read a book in the summer. While our home is downtown, the west end has a very neighbourhood feel, with traffic calmed streets, lots of trees, mature landscaping, and lovely old character homes. We are a quick walk to several schools, beautiful Stanley Park, the beach at English Bay, and great shopping and movie theatres. We have a second bedroom ready to welcome a child into our home.
Spencer is a chartered accountant and is the finance manager at a film company. His office is downtown, so he can walk to work every day. Before he became an accountant, Spencer went to film school. He loves film and television, and really enjoys working in the industry while still being able to use his chartered accountant designation. Spencer is of Chinese and English descent.
Kenny works as a human resources director for a family-owned business in West Vancouver. He’s worked there for ten years, and loves the people he works with. His employer is very flexible and they are excited that we are adopting since most of Kenny’s colleagues have children of their own, including adoptive parents. Kenny is of Metis and French Canadian descent.
About Our Dog Brutus
Our Family is rounded out by our dog Brutus, a four year old shih-tzu. He’s a non shedding, hypoallergenic dog (Kenny’s allergic) and he loves everyone he meets, including children. Brutus enjoys playing with his toys, but is just as happy snuggling in your lap while you relax.
Family and Friends
When we adopt a child, we plan for Kenny to stay at home with the child during the parental leave. Kenny loves to cook many different types of cuisine, so the child will definitely be well fed! Because Kenny and Spencer also both like to read, we hope to be able to share this hobby with our child. Plus, Spencer is still a kid at heart and loves Disney movies, so he’s already looking forward to rewatching some of his favourites with the child.
We are both close with our families. Spencer’s parents are retired and live in Kitsilano, which is just a ten minute drive away (or a 45-minute walk which is nice in the summer!). We see them very regularly; in fact, they come over almost every day while we are at work to walk Brutus. They don’t have their own dog because they love spending time with Brutus. They’re also excited that we are looking to grow our family. Spencer’s younger brother lives in North Vancouver and we see him regularly for family dinners.
Kenny’s parents are also retired and live in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. We go over with Brutus and Kenny’s sister Jinny on long weekends, or sometimes they will come stay with us in our condo over the weekend. We always have a great time relaxing in Nanaimo and hanging out with Kenny’s family and friends that live there. Kenny’s sister lives in Vancouver and is a high school teacher. She’s great with kids and can’t wait to be an aunt.
Kenny’s parents are originally from Quebec, so Kenny grew up speaking both French and English. We’d love to put a child in a French-speaking program so that he or she can also grow up speaking both French and English. Kenny also recently found out that he is Metis, and we’re excited to learn more about Metis culture and traditions.
Spencer’s mother is Chinese. Some of his Chinese family lives in Vancouver, so we’ll get together to see them for family dinners and special occasions, like Chinese New Year.
We love traveling and backpacking. Recently, we’ve been lucky enough to travel to California, Indonesia, England, India, and France. We hope to make travel and exploration a big part of our family’s future, with trips to South America and Africa planned for the near future. Plus, as we love Disneyland that will always be part of our family’s travel plans.
We are friends with three couples who have recently had their own children. We’ve loved getting to know them. One of the kids lives in Nanaimo with his parents, and we always have a great time when they come and stay with us over the weekend. Spencer has some stuffed animals of his favourite characters (Spider-Man & Donald Duck) ready to play with when our friends’ kids come to visit. The kids also love playing with Brutus, who can be a bit shy around kids at first but loves to play with them. When we adopt, we know we can rely on our friends for parenting tips!
Since we both went to university, we think education is very important. We’d love to have a child who we can help with homework, and who may be interested in extra-curricular activities at school. We hope that the child will eventually go to university like us. We both went to the University of British Columbia so it would be great if they wanted to go there, especially since it’s also close to where we live now!
When we adopt, we look forward to spending time with a child, playing with toys in the evening after we eat dinner together and watching cartoons or reading stories before bedtime. On the weekends, we can go to the playground or Stanley Park, go to the movies, have big family dinners, and do our grocery shopping all together.
In the summers, we’d love to go boating in Nanaimo on Kenny’s parents’ speed boat or on our friends’ sail boat. We both like to bike ride through Stanley Park and it would be a lot of fun to do that with a child. We haven’t gone skiing or snowboarding in a few years, but we think it would be fun to take the child to Grouse or Cypress Mountain to learn how to ski or to go tobogganing, and have hot chocolate afterward. If the child likes to cook, Kenny would be excited to have a helper in the kitchen since Spencer isn’t very good at cooking.
We can’t wait to add another member to our small family! We think that we will be great parents, and we have a big support network that will help us out. If it works out, we think it would be great to have an open relationship with the birth parents and make them a part of the child’s life. It would be fun to get together for lunches and dinners.
Thank you for considering us! We want you to know that we will always do everything we can to make sure that the child we adopt is happy and healthy, and will be our number one priority once they join our family.
