Heather & Mike
We are Heather and Mike, and we are looking to adopt our first child. We are writing this letter with the hope that it will help you to get to know us a bit better – who we are, what we value, and what a life with us would be like. We can’t imagine what this decision must be like for you, but we hope this letter will answer a few of the questions you may have about us and help you decide if we could be a good fit for your child.
We are a young, happy couple who has been married for over 10 years. We are both very fortunate to have stable jobs that we enjoy, with employers who provide flexible working conditions and good family benefits. Home is nestled on a quiet street in a residential neighbourhood, within walking distance to family, parks, shops, and various community centres. We have always wanted to have children, and we are finally at a place in our lives, in our careers, and in our finances, where we are ready to expand our family. With Heather being an adopted child, adoption to us has always been part of our plans to grow our family. Our hope is that, sharing this common experience, she will be able to relate to the questions and feelings that can come from being adopted that our child might experience as they grow up.
If there is one thing that you should know about us, it’s that family is very important to us. We are lucky to have our parents and most of our siblings living in the Greater Vancouver area, and we see each other all the time for big holiday celebrations, weekend brunches after church, or quick hellos over coffee or frozen yogurt. We absolutely adore our nieces and nephews, and can’t wait for our little one to join in the fun of tea parties, story time, spontaneous dancing around the house, and movie nights snuggled on the couch. Family time is something that we were both raised to cherish, and we hope to keep up some of our family traditions like Christmas cookie bakes, summer camping, and nightly dinners together at the dining room table.
Another big theme in our lives is finding ways to incorporate things that are fun and creative into our day to day. Between the two of us, Mike is definitely the goofier one, always ready with a funny jig or a joke to get you smiling. We love to play games together, whether its board games like Scrabble or Cranium, or in-person puzzle escape rooms. Heather is the more “crafty” one, willing to try anything once, but mostly loves doing pottery, scrapbooking, and photography. Music is something that we both have a love for, but in different ways. Mike’s love of music can be seen (and heard) every day as he builds and plays new playlists on his phone to incorporate the latest album or new artist that he’s fallen in love with. Heather loves more of the performing arts, like going to see musical theatre or the symphony, and plunking around on the piano at home. We both think that making time to have a little fun, do something creative, and bring laughter into the mix are important pieces to a happy and balanced life. We look forward to helping our child explore and discover what creative things they enjoy, and having a lot of fun and laughs along the way!
Lastly, we want you to know that we are very loving and open people. We will love your child unconditionally and support them to fulfill their dreams as they grow and find their place in the world. We believe that there can never be too many people who love a child and you will always be a part of this child’s life. Whether it’s as part of their birth story, or a more present role, we will be family and we look forward to finding a level of “openness” that works for everyone. We can never know what the future holds, but we do know that your child will grow up surrounded by love, not only from us, but from their grandparents, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and (one day when they are a bit older) the love of a dog. :)
We hope that this gives you a small window into who we are. We wish you luck on your journey and, if the fit is right, we look forward to meeting you to learn more about each other.
